66 Artists Will Participate in Our 5th Year

Sixty-six artists will be sharing, selling and demonstrating their work at this year’s Open Studio Tour, April 25-26. Of those, 16 are new to the tour, and 50 are returning from last year or years past.

This is the 5th year of our tour, originally headed by Alice Richards and supported by the Stanislaus Travel and Tourism Roundtable. The tour’s goal is to involve artists from all nine cities of Stanislaus County and who open their studios with an atmosphere of learning for visitors. This is also an opportunity for artists to exhibit, demonstrate and sell their work.

In 2009, a four member Steering Committee met for a year to plan, promote and publicize the tour. Over fifty artists signed up. Tour maps were designed and sold for $10. The Artist Open Studio tour has been a success these past four years with as many as 75 artists included. This year, 2015, marks 5 years of the tour’s existence. Congratulations to the volunteers who have made this, and past years, a reality.

To celebrate our 5th anniversary, the Open Studio committee has decided to give away FIVE $200 gift certificates to tourists, drawn from the entry forms returned to any participating studio. The drawing will take place the week following the tour, and will be good towards purchase of any original art at any studio through the month of May.

Tour books will be on sale the first of March for $10 at the following locations: Carnegie Art Center in Turlock, Mistlin Art Gallery, Chartreuse Muse Gallery and Modesto Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in Modesto, and the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce. Map booklets can also be purchased from any participating artist.

008_vLaszlo_mon029As a photographer of nudes in the landscape, I not only attempt to honor the beauty and wonder of both landscape and human form, but also to seek out and explore possible themes and messages which may emerge. The results are not always classical nude photography, but are, somehow, more satisfying to my particular tastes and expressive needs. The following are examples from recent journeys in this direction:
This series was inspired by a model who lay down in the ashes of a burned out tree to get warm.  Her huddling beneath the wind, and eventual rise into the sunlight, resulted in a wonderful depiction of an archetypal death/rebirth cycle.
This series was inspired by a fellow photographer whose religious interpretation of my critique images seemed to link them to a story that was greater that my simple portrayal of survival in the desert.  This series includes both male and female forms.  Examples include:  “Expelled from the Garden,” “High Desert Madonna,” and “The Pilgrim.”

This series began when a model crawled out of the primordial soup and slithered his was up a dry creek bed, sniffing the air like a giant lizard.

Purchase Awards – Your Chance to Win a Work of Art

Five Stanislaus County artists have been selected as purchase award winners for the 2013 Artist Open Studio Tour.

What does that mean? Participating artists were asked to submit one piece of art to the purchase award contest. The entries were juried by Deanna Hunt, a professor of art at University of the Pacific. From the twenty entries, she selected to top ten. The AOS committee then, decided to purchase the top five from the artists. In April, these works will be given away to participants in the open studio tour.

Included in the tour map booklet is an entry form that can be dropped off at any artists’ studio during open studio weekend. From the submitted entry forms, a drawing will be held and the paintings will go to the winners.

To participate:

1. Purchase your tour map booklet (beginning on March 1)

2. Fill out the entry form on the back page

3. Deposit the entry form at any studio on the tour

Good luck!
